Summary

"Clayhanger" by Arnold Bennett is a story that follows Edwin Clayhanger as he grows from a boy into a young man ready to inherit his family's printing business. Set in the industrial towns of Staffordshire, it looks at what Edwin wants for himself compared to what his family and society expect. At the beginning, Edwin is thinking about leaving school and his future as he watches life go by near a canal. A girl hitting a horse reminds us of childhood innocence, but Edwin already knows he will face hard work and challenges. Talking with his friend Charlie shows Edwin's competitive side and how he thinks a lot about his role in the world as he prepares to step into his father's shoes. The novel explores family problems, personal dreams, and how people lived during that time.
