Summary

"Harding of Allenwood" by Harold Bindloss is a story set in the Canadian prairie during a time of great change, where Craig Harding, an ambitious man, tries to make a life for himself. The story introduces us to Harding and his friend, Fred Devine, as they work to build a home amidst the untamed land. We learn about the troubles they face due to the traditional way of life respected by the wealthy Allenwood settlers. When he meets Beatrice Mowbray, topics, like class differences and the fight between long-standing customs and modern ideas, come up. As their lives become more connected, Harding’s goals will come up against the expectations of Beatrice's family, resulting in issues as they try to build their lives.
