Summary

"A Man from the North" by Arnold Bennett is a story about Richard Larch, a young man from the North Country, and his magnetic draw towards London. The narrative follows his dreams and first steps navigating the city as he attempts to leave behind his provincial existence. The book looks deep into Richard’s desires, his interactions in the booming metropolis, and the differences between his life before and the exciting one he looks forward to in London. When Richard arrives in London, carrying with him big hopes, he faces navigating the unfamiliar city, struggling to find a place to live, and meeting people, including his landlady and her daughter, Lily. As he thinks about his life and meets new people, readers see inside Richard’s goals as he comes to terms with his romantic dreams of the city compared to actual urban life. This background sets the scene to see if he’s successful as a writer amid city living.
