Summary

"The Disowned — Volume 01" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a story from the 1800s about a spirited young man who finds himself drawn to a group of gypsies. The book explores the differences between what society expects and the freedom of wandering. The main character, Clarence Linden, is trying to figure out who he is and where he belongs, and his journey begins one warm evening when he meets a gypsy on his way to town. The invitation to spend the night leads to a joyful feast. He enjoys the group's friendship which makes him see the appeal and warmth of their lifestyle, and feels a sense of belonging that stands in contrast to his feelings of being alone and pressured by his past. This sets the stage for a story driven by Clarence's desire for adventure and a place to call home.
