Summary

"Sjambak" by Jack Vance is a science fiction tale from the early 1950s that takes us to the planet Cirgamesç through the eyes of Wilbur Murphy, a curious photographer for "Know Your Universe!". As Murphy chases the local legend of a horse-riding figure who welcomes spaceships, he's drawn into a world of social unrest and political intrigue. Meeting a proud prince and a captured bandit, Murphy begins to see beyond the surface of this alien society and inches closer to the truth about the fabled "Horseman of Space", all while navigating the dangerous currents of a rising rebellion—a journey that changes his understanding of reality itself.
