Summary

"The Disowned — Volume 05" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a historical fiction novel set in the mid-1800s that explores the difficult choices people make when they are faced with being virtuous but poor. The story follows Glendower, a man who strongly believes in doing what is right, as he tries to survive poverty. Even though he is smart and wants to do well, he's unable to take care of his wife and child, who are sick and hungry. He gets tempted by Crauford to do something that could bring him riches but would require him to betray his morals, showcasing the conflict between Glendower's values and his desperate situation. He thought that he only had two choices, either steal or watch his family die. The plot demonstrates society's struggles and questions about right and wrong during that time period in an effort to understand morality when times are tough.
