Summary

"The Adventures of a Three-Guinea Watch" by Talbot Baines Reed is a story that explores the experiences of a watch as it journeys through the lives of different owners, most notably a young boy named Charlie Newcome, who is starting his life at boarding school. Told from the watch's perspective, the story follows its sale and considers what it means to be responsible, including watching Charlie's family and home, and how it perceives the world around it, especially as it gains insight into Charlie's feelings as he prepares to leave home. The narrative begins with the watch commenting on how it felt when purchased and the excitement of being given to a boy, establishing a lighthearted and thoughtful tone as the watch develops its character. The story sets the stage for the adventures that lie ahead for both the watch and Charlie as he embarks on his childhood.
