Summary

"Ernest Maltravers — Volume 05" by Baron Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton chronicles the life of Ernest Maltravers as he struggles with identity and what he wants in a world where society is changing fast. Returning to London after being abroad, Maltravers is hopeful but quickly becomes disappointed by the shallow nature of high society. He finds himself reflecting on past memories, especially Alice Darvil and Valerie de Ventadour, as he wonders about what it all means. Although he's a well-known writer, Maltravers feels alone, caught between chasing fame and finding real happiness and love.
