Summary

"Godolphin, Volume 3" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a book that takes place in the 1800s and continues to look at the ideas of social position, wanting to be successful, and how complicated love and marriage can be. The story focuses on Constance, the Countess of Erpingham, as she manages her high-society life, trying to juggle her political goals with her feelings about Godolphin. At the beginning of the novel, Constance is going to political events and parties where we find out she is a good diplomat trying to change her social group. She holds parties and talks with powerful people like Lady Delville, and the story makes the reader feel that she is struggling between what society expects of her and what she wants in her personal life. She is struggling inside as she tries to look proper in public, but still loves Godolphin in her private feelings, and this shows us how complicated she is as a person. The conversations in the book show that she is intelligent and has a lot of ambition, and those conversations set the scene for the rest of the story where it will discuss more in-depth emotions and ideas about society.
