Summary

"My Novel" — Volume 05 by Edward Bulwer Lytton explores the intricate relationships between family, social class, and the prevailing societal norms, particularly through the contrasting lives of characters like the ambitious Mr. Richard Avenel, his bookish nephew Leonard, and the unfortunate Mr. Digby. The plot begins by introducing insightful discussions on novel writing, along with Richard Avenel's ostentatious return to town where he displays his wealth, juxtaposed against Leonard's quiet intellectual pursuits. The tensions heighten as Richard's haughty behavior offends Leonard's sense of justice and concern for the working class, while Mr. Digby's struggles epitomize the harsh realities of poverty and the indifference he encounters when seeking help to secure his daughter's future, which ultimately sets the stage for a critical inspection of early societal values and moral obligations.
