The story kicks off with Princess Margaret's thirteenth birthday and introduces Abraham, a Jewish pedlar, and his daughter, Belasez. As Abraham makes arrangements for his daughter to make a scarf for the Countess, the plot kicks in as tensions arise between Jewish and Christian communities when Margaret becomes curious and has interactions with Belasez.
