Summary

"Sound of Terror" by Don Berry is a science fiction story about the mental and physical struggles of astronauts in space, written in the late 1950s. The story focuses on Johnny Youngbear, an astronaut readying for a big space trip on "The Ship," where he wrestles with the fear and doubt that come with exploring the unknown. However, things get intense when Johnny's friend, Mitch Campbell, suffers a terrible accident during his own flight due to a frightening sound from the ship. Johnny talks with a psychologist, trying to understand how space travel and new tech could cause madness, which will leave you sinking into discussions of the deep relationships and grim realities faced by those brave enough to journey away from Earth.
