Summary

"The Raider" by Don Berry is a science fiction story set in a universe controlled by the powerful Terran Federation that centers around the character of Wolf, a morally conflicted assassin tasked with eliminating Mayne Landing, the administrator of the Colony Planets. Dropped onto a planet teeming with revolutionaries, he finds himself questioning the righteousness of his mission as he witnesses the Federation's oppression firsthand. As Wolf prepares for the assassination, he confronts the potential repercussions his actions could have on innocent civilians, including those living in a small village that could face brutal retaliation. During Landing’s inspection of the village the assassination takes place, bringing violence and chaos. The story then concludes with Wolf grappling with regret and wondering if freedom can ever truly justify the cost.
