Summary

"Hunter Patrol" by H. Beam Piper, along with John J. McGuire, is a mid-20th-century science fiction story filled with war, journeys through time, and the search for peace, as told through a soldier's eyes in a future controlled by a strict ruler. Captain Fred Benson finds himself in a future where the United Nations is under the control of The Guide, a leader who keeps the ideals of beauty and peace alive through oppressive rules, leading to a heavy moral price. Captain Benson forms relationships with a group of people ready to challenge The Guide's control and finds himself in an era where time travel is used to bring him from his war, making him complicit with the assassination of The Guide for humanity's sake. What then unravels is the moral problems of using violence to achieve peace and unexpected results of using power, which will have a gripping impact on not only Benson, but the quest for peace, violence, and authority, soon to realize who carries the true power.
