Summary

"Signs & Wonders" by J. D. (John Davys) Beresford is a speculative novel from the early 1900s that dives into big questions using a story that mixes dreams and real life, introducing characters and a setting that makes you think about what it all means, as the main character has a dream that takes him to another world, making him question humanity and the differences between what he knows and what's strange, serving as a starting point to consider what it means to be alive, aware, and part of society, and with conversations between different characters. The story suggests that it will look at what happens when what one person wants doesn't match what society expects.

About the Author

John Davys Beresford was an English writer, now remembered mainly for his early science fiction and some short stories of the horror story and ghost story genres. Beresford was a great admirer of H. G. Wells, and wrote the first critical study of Wells in 1915. His Wellsian novel The Hampdenshire Wonder (1911) was a major influence for the author Olaf Stapledon. His other science-fiction novels include The Riddle of the Tower, about a dystopian, hive-like society.
