Summary

"H.G. Wells" by J.D. Beresford is a study of the writings of an English author from the early 1900s. Beresford gives us a good look into the main ideas contained in Wells' books, showing his interesting take on society, people, and what's to come. Beresford looks at how Wells mixes creative stories with thoughts about society, pointing out how his stories show the tough parts of modern life. The analysis starts by telling us about Wells' younger days, noting important events that molded how he saw the world. Beresford shares that Wells had a usual way of seeing things, not changed by what society thought, which let him question the world around him. Beresford also talks about important books like "The Time Machine" and "The War of the Worlds," explaining how Wells used made-up things to talk about problems in society like differences in social class and how people change over time. This look at the start of Wells' life and work makes way for further study into his stories and what they mean for understanding society and how people connect with each other.

About the Author

John Davys Beresford was an English writer, now remembered mainly for his early science fiction and some short stories of the horror story and ghost story genres. Beresford was a great admirer of H. G. Wells, and wrote the first critical study of Wells in 1915. His Wellsian novel The Hampdenshire Wonder (1911) was a major influence for the author Olaf Stapledon. His other science-fiction novels include The Riddle of the Tower, about a dystopian, hive-like society.
