Summary

"An Englishman Looks at the World" by H. G. Wells is a collection of observations that challenges early 20th-century society using the perspective of an Englishman. These essays tackle the then-modern world's issues, like new technologies, how governments work, and personal freedoms. Wells thinks about how the world is changing, especially with things like airplanes, empires, and social problems. One of the first things he talks about is M. Blériot's flight over the English Channel, and it makes him think about what progress really means for society. Wells touches on society, work, and where civilization is headed as he questions England's progress and urges the English to look closely at their own values and actions as the world speeds forward.
