"Mr. Britling Sees It Through" by H.G. Wells is a story set in the early 1900s around World War I, that introduces Mr. Direck, an American fascinated by England and its culture, who wants to meet the well-known English writer Mr. Britling. The book explores cultural differences and what it meant to be English, with Mr. Britling representing deep thought during a time of change. At the start, Mr. Direck is excited on his first trip to England, noticing everything that makes it different from America. He goes to Dower House to meet Mr. Britling, someone he has always respected and looked up to. The beginning part of the story shows their meeting and the funny situations that happen because Mr. Britling is a bit odd, which Mr. Direck, being American, finds interesting. This sets the scene for deeper talks where they discuss ideas about England's identity and the social issues of the time that were happening as the Great War was coming closer.
