"The Desert and the Stars" by Keith Laumer is a science fiction book that focuses on the difficulties of keeping peace between different groups in outer space. The story is about Retief, a diplomat, who has to find a way to make peace on the planet Flamme where there's trouble between the Boyars who live there and the Aga Kagans who are trying to take over. Even though the Aga Kagans might seem old-fashioned, they have powerful weapons, which makes Retief's job even harder. To make things worse, the people Retief works for on Earth don't really help him, so he has to use his smarts and deal with silly situations to help the Boyars protect their land from the sneaky Aga Kagans, showing how funny and serious space diplomacy can be.
