Summary

"Public School Life: Boys, Parents, Masters" by Alec Waugh is a detailed look into the world of English public schools from the perspectives of students, their families, and the teachers. Waugh's goal appears to be to take apart the idealized image of these schools and present the real challenges faced by everyone involved. The book begins by setting the scene of this unique environment, pointing out the intense pressure put on young boys as they try to find their place socially and academically. The author considers the hopes that parents have for their children and the difficult change boys experience when leaving home for school, picturing their first days as full of worry. Through stories and careful observations, Waugh starts to investigate the public school system, showing how hard it is for students to develop their own personalities within such a strict setting.
