Summary

"The Prisoners of Mainz" by Alec Waugh is a story about captured officers during World War I in a German prison. It shows what it was like to be trapped, the friendships that were made, and the strange things that soldiers had to deal with during the war, especially how they lived each day and the problems they faced. The book starts off with a soldier remembering a gas attack on March 21, 1918, and then goes into his time on the front lines. It shows a mix of stress and boredom, and then moves to the moment when he's captured by the German army. The story is both serious and thoughtful, mixing the tough truths of war with moments of humor as the main character gets used to being a prisoner. It also points out how complicated people's relationships are in a war setting and how they bond over the tough times they share in the prison camp.
