Summary

"The Testing of Diana Mallory" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a story set in early 20th-century England and centers on a young woman named Diana Mallory. After years spent living abroad with her father, Diana returns to her homeland and finds herself at Beechcote Manor, a lovely old house. An orphan who is also new to English society, she seeks to discover belonging while dealing with intricate emotions. The beginning of the book paints a vivid picture of Diana's feelings as she soaks in the picturesque English countryside and contemplates her earlier travels. We see her connect with the warmth of local life and begin a relationship with Mrs. Colwood. As Diana forges her path, she comes across a combination of promise and difficulties while retaining her introspective nature and her longing for connection and heritage.
