Summary

"The Mating of Lydia" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a story set in the early 1900s and focuses on intricate relationships shaped by evolving social expectations. The novel begins at the aging Threlfall Tower, where a pair of servants, Dixon and his wife, anxiously prepare for the arrival of the new owner, Mr. Melrose, and his Italian wife, Netta. Their conversation highlights their worries about the run-down estate and their unfamiliar circumstances; the arrival of the Melroses hints at emerging conflicts because of the clashing lifestyles and anticipations between the newcomers and the locals. Mrs. Melrose's adjustment to the dreary Cumbrian environment stands in stark contrast to her background, foreshadowing coming difficulties as the family establishes their new residence.
