Summary

"Lady Connie" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a story about a young noblewoman named Lady Constance Bledlow, set in the early 1900s. After losing her parents, Constance must live with her aunt and uncle in Oxford, where she is dropped into a world of class differences, social rules, and finding out who she really is. The story begins with Constance arriving at her new home, causing excitement and worry for her cousins, Nora and Alice, who react in very different ways to Constance's wealth. Constance's family imagines the troubles she might bring as she spends her first day meeting her relatives, finding both kindness and worry. As she gets to know the people around her, the novel suggests that it will follow her path to becoming herself in a society that both admires and is jealous of her.
