Summary

"Helbeck of Bannisdale — Volume II" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a story set in a time when love was tested by different beliefs and social rules. Laura Fountain and Alan Helbeck are trying to build a life together, even though they see the world in very different ways, especially when it comes to Alan's strong Catholic faith. Right away, the story pulls you in with a sad event: a worker dies in an accident, leaving a young daughter behind. Laura's reaction reveals an inner strength, which leads her to help the orphaned girl. All this happens while hints of problems that could break Laura and Alan apart hover in the background, suggesting tough times ahead as Laura chases after joy in a society that feels like it's holding her back.
