Summary

"Lawyer Quince" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny short story set in the early 1900s about how people in the country misunderstand things in daily life, especially when it comes to local arguments. Mr. Quince, who makes shoes in Little Haven, seems like he knows the law because he taught himself to read. The story makes fun of what happens when Mr. Rose, a farmer, finds Celia's boyfriend, Pascoe, locked in his stable and asks for Mr. Quince's legal advice. Instead of making things better, Mr. Rose's actions make things even funnier. The story gets more interesting when Celia locks herself in Mr. Quince's tool shed, showing that she likes Pascoe. In the end, everyone laughs as Mr. Rose loses control and Mr. Quince seems wise, even though he didn't mean to be, while chaos ensues.
