"Homeward Bound" by W. W. Jacobs is a comical short story that follows Mr. Hatchard and his wife as they navigate the ups and downs of married life, particularly their constant disagreements about money and Mrs. Hatchard's fondness for spending. The story takes a turn when Mr. Hatchard, pushed to his limit by his wife’s purchase of some costly pink vases, impulsively leaves home seeking separation. However, he quickly realizes how much he misses his wife and the comforts of home. In a surprising twist, he returns disguised as a lodger, only to find Mrs. Hatchard renting out rooms in their house. The story builds to a humorous climax when another lodger causes chaos. Mr. Hatchard steps in, and the couple reconcile. This highlights the silly yet enduring nature of their marriage.
