Summary

"For Better or Worse" by W. W. Jacobs is a comical short story that takes place in old British society and looks at love, faithfulness, and unexpected turns in relationships. The story tells of Mr. Benjamin Davis, a sailor whose been out at sea for about 35 years and who thinks his wife left him, getting some surprising information about her only to set out on a journey to find her, along with his friend Mr. Wotton. When he gets to her new house, Mr. Davis meets Mrs. Smith, who first says that he's not her husband. Throughout the story, silly mix-ups reveal that Mrs. Smith is actually his long-ago spouse and their tentative reunion occurs with a mix of feelings and comedy. By the end, both of them think about what has happened and what could happen in the future, highlighting the whimsical side of love and forgiveness.
