"The Boatswain's Mate" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story that explores love and silly plans during the early 1900s. When retired boatswain George Benn is turned down by Mrs. Waters, a pub owner, he gets super bummed out, so he makes a crazy plan to win her over. He gets Ned Travers, an old soldier, to act like a burglar so George can be a hero and save Mrs. Waters. But things go wrong when Mrs. Waters turns out to be tougher than they thought, catching the fake burglar herself. This story shows how silly things can get when people try too hard in love, and it reminds us that life is full of funny surprises.
