"Manners Makyth Man" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny short story about a night-watchman whose ordinary job takes a turn when he meets a young boy who claims to have escaped a bad home life to become a sailor. The story looks at what people think is proper versus what is real, especially how people act and treat each other. The watchman tries to assist the boy, but he soon discovers everyone isn't always truthful, especially when a charming sister gets involved. The confusion rises as the watchman searches for the boy, and finally, the sister shares a surprise about herself, making the watchman think about class and how we relate to one another, leaving him both annoyed and amused.
