Summary

"The Changing Numbers" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story about Mr. Samuel Gunnill, his daughter Selina, and their comical adventures with friends and neighbors. This short story is a lighthearted look at trying to be respectable, the silly things people do when they drink, and the bond between a father and daughter. Mr. Gunnill's story about a wild night gets him into trouble with Mr. Cooper, a local policeman. The problems get bigger because of Mr. Gunnill's drinking, Selina's disapproval, and the funny tries of her admirers, like Mr. Herbert Sims, to win her over. The story gets even funnier when a prank against Cooper goes wrong, leading to confusion and damaged property; eventually, a smart character named Mr. Drill fixes the situation, by repairing the constable's ruined helmet. With lots of tricks, misunderstandings, and a lively home setting, the story shows the ridiculous side of social rules and how people relate to each other.
