"Stepping Backwards" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story that takes place a long time ago, focusing on a man's attempt to look younger, which causes a series of funny mix-ups and mistaken identity issues with his wife. The story looks at how we see each other, who we think we are, and the funny things that can happen when we try to change ourselves too much. Mr. Simpson, in the story, decides to shave off his white hair and beard and dye his remaining hair black. But when he gets back to his house, Mrs. Simpson doesn't realize it's him, which starts a chain of funny events involving their friends, adding to the confusion. Mr. Mills, a friend to both of them, tries to help Mrs. Simpson understand that it's really her husband, but things only get worse. The story mixes humor with ideas about how the way we look can change how we relate to each other, and it all ends with Mr. Simpson having to prove who he is while trying to deal with his wife's disbelief and the meddling of their neighbors.
