"The White Cat" by W. W. Jacobs is a whimsical short story set in an old English village looking at themes of wealth, desire, and our bonds with our pets. The humor centers on Joe Clark, who stands to inherit a lot of money if his uncle's spoiled white cat stays alive, and George Barstow, the caretaker, who goes to crazy lengths to protect it.
