Summary

"Squire Arden" by Mrs. Oliphant is a story set in a quiet village and centers on Edgar Arden, who is coming back to his family's estate after being away for a while; the book is also set in the late 1800s. When Edgar comes home, the village celebrates, but it also reminds his old caretaker, Sarah, of the hard times he went through before. Edgar is especially close to his sister, Clare, and together they deal with their family's past, including the difficult relationship between Edgar and his late father; Clare always looks out for her brother. The story explores what it means to have family responsibilities and find your own way while dealing with a complicated past. The complex brother-sister dynamic emerges as they navigate the duties that come with their last name.
