Summary

"The Prodigals and Their Inheritance; vol. 1" by Mrs. Oliphant is a story set in the late 1800s that follows the Chester family as they experience difficult situations. Mr. Chester is not happy with his sons, George and Tom, because they are not living up to his expectations, causing a lot of stress and unhappiness in the family. His daughter, Winifred, offers some hope, even though things are tense. When Tom comes home after getting kicked out of school, the difficult relationship between him and his dad gets worse, even though Winifred tries to make peace. The story shows how hard it is to balance family responsibilities with what people want for themselves, and how love, dreams, and reality can clash within a family dealing with disappointment.
