Summary

"The Eldest Son" by Archibald Marshall is a story from the early 1900s that follows the Clinton family, mainly the oldest son, Dick Clinton, as they deal with family stuff, what they have to do, and marriages in the English countryside. Topics such as doing what's expected, keeping up traditions, and making your own choices are probably shown through how the family members act with each other and other people. At the start, Squire Clinton is not happy that Dick, his oldest son, is almost forty and hasn't even thought about getting married. The Squire is worried about having someone to take over their estate, called Kencote, and talks about this with his wife. They talk about their eldest son and other kids, showing what they are like and how they get along. Also, Miss Bird, who teaches the children, is leaving to take care of her sick sister, which sets the stage for changes at home.
