Summary

"The Convert" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny short story about a man named Mr. Billing who tries to change his ways after being inspired by Mr. Purnip. Mr. Billing wants to stop fighting, swearing, and drinking, and instead be kind and peaceful in his tough neighborhood. He hopes to become a better person, but his friends and neighbors make fun of him and challenge his new beliefs, leading to a series of comical events. Even though he really tries to be good, it's hard for him to stay peaceful when people are mean to him. In the end, Mr. Billing learns that it's important to be both kind and strong, and he goes back to his old habits but with a better understanding of himself and how people act.
