Dirty Work Deep Waters, Part 11.

"Dirty Work" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story taking place in a time long ago. The story is about a night watchman who sees someone steal a purse and throw it into the water. He decides to jump in and get it, not to be a hero, but to keep the purse for himself. This sets off a series of silly events and problems for the watchman as he interacts with a silly landlord and a confused police worker, showing just how bad his plan really was. Themes of greed and making bad choices are lightened up by Jacobs' funny writing style. The story is full of jokes, but also a little bit of suspense, leading to an unexpected and ironic ending where the watchman gets into much more trouble than he expected.
