Summary

"The Horse-Stealers and Other Stories" by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is a compilation of short stories that captures life in Russia during the late 1800s. "The Horse-Stealers," the collection's initial feature, introduces Yergunov, a boisterous and often inebriated hospital assistant who struggles with his own self-importance. When he becomes lost in a snowstorm and ends up in a shady tavern, he’s exposed to a cast of peasants, criminals, and complex moral situations: the story kicks off with a snowstorm isolating Yergunov, leading him to a tavern filled with shady characters. The story deals with themes of temptation, social class, and the mistakes people make; and it explores Yergunov's tough path as his boasts are tested, his vulnerabilities appear, and his relationships change with men and women. These initial scenes lay the foundation for Chekhov's insightful looks into human behavior, the complicated social interactions of rural society, and the conflicts between people’s wants, offering a deep study of ethics and identity.

"Medicine is my lawful wife," he once said, "and literature is my mistress."
