Summary

"The Duel and Other Stories" by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov is a compilation exploring the intricate nature of human connections, principles, and communal standards found in the landscape of 19th-century Russian society. The story presents Ivan Andreitch Laevsky, a despondent clerk, and Nadyezhda Fyodorovna, his companion, and enters into Laevsky's growing dissatisfaction with his life and relationship. Through dialogue with his friend, army doctor Samoylenko, Laevsky expresses an understanding of his profound dissatisfaction and feelings of purposelessness, which initiates the story's concentration on internal conflict and the inclination to liberate oneself from life's difficult conditions. Laevsky's struggle with feelings of moral inadequacy and the resulting conflicts draw the reader into a thoughtful examination of society.

About the Author

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was a Russian playwright and short-story writer. His career as a playwright produced four classics, and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Chekhov is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. Chekhov was a physician by profession. "Medicine is my lawful wife," he once said, "and literature is my mistress."
