Summary

"Two Thousand Miles on an Automobile" by Arthur Jerome Eddy is a memoir about a road trip in the early days of cars, where "Chauffeur" and the Professor explore New England, New York, Canada, and the West by automobile. The book captures not only the landscape and machinery of the journey, but also experiences of an innovative, rapidly changing time through the author's interactions with different people ranging from children to farm workers. The author reflects on the car’s finicky engine and what it takes to actually drive one and, preparing for the trip, sets the stage for an amusing and insightful expedition through the culture of late 1800s North America.
