Summary

"Freeway" by Bryce Walton is a science fiction tale from the 1950s that presents a chilling future where people labeled "Crackpots" are forced to endlessly drive on highways. It's a story about what it means to be free and how much control a society can have over individuals. Stan and Anna Morrison, a husband and wife, are stuck in this nightmare, desperate to escape. Stan, who used to be a professor, fights against the system while trying to care for Anna, who struggles with her mental health. Constantly watched by the authorities, they face dangers both on the road and within their own relationship, which is tested by isolation and terror. Their pursuit of freedom sparks a revolt, leading them to a secret place where they might finally be able to escape the Freeway’s chains, symbolizing the strength it takes to overcome oppressive rules.
