Summary

"By Earthlight" by Bryce Walton is a science fiction story set in the early 1950s that follows Hal Barlow on what he believes to be a pioneering journey to the moon. This journey, however, is one-way, a sacrifice orchestrated by the Brotherhood, a group aiming to ignite a peaceful revolution during a time when the threat of atomic war hangs over the Earth. Faced with the crushing weight of isolation and encased in a bulky spacesuit, Barlow wrestles with his fear and must confront the stark lunar landscape as he searches for meaning in his mission. This quest forces him to rethink his understanding of humanity and challenges the ideals he once held dear, while also wrestling with the revelation of the Brotherhood's true motives, pushing him toward a profound understanding of human connection as he faces death alone in an alien environment.
