Summary

"Unwelcome Tenant" by Roger D. Aycock is a science fiction novel from the 1950s that investigates ideas about what we know and who we are through Robert Maynard's experiences, a man who finds out that hidden organisms truly control humans underneath the surface. As Maynard travels alone to Mars, he feels like a winner and starts to feel freedom. This is when he figures out that a parasitic mind has been inside him for his whole life, but it leaves him when he gets close to the planet. Maynard's mind expands with a new level of knowledge. He wants to free people from these parasite-like Tenants, dreaming that men could make a whole new world of their own. Yet, just as he is nearing Mars, he faces the scary suspicion that these lifeforms might also be on Mars, creating tension about his newfound freedom and the challenge against these invisible organisms.
