Too close to the forest

"Too close to the forest" by Bryce Walton, along with Al Reynolds, is a story about the risky world of telepathy research in a time when science wasn't so sure if it was real. It follows Dr. Marsten, a scientist trying to prove mind-to-mind communication exists, and Max Reinach, his grad student, as they embark on an experiment to prove the skeptical scientific community wrong. Dr. Marsten needs this experiment to succeed to get back his good name in the science world, but everything falls apart during the big demonstration. The failure pushes Dr. Marsten to a tragic end, leaving Max to struggle with his own doubts and, later, a renewed commitment to continue the search for answers at the risk of his own professional life.
