Summary

"As You Like It" by William Shakespeare is a romantic comedy set in the late 1500s, primarily in the Forest of Arden. The story looks at love, who people really are, and how different life is in the royal court compared to in the countryside. The play follows Orlando, a young nobleman running away from his mean brother, and Rosalind, the clever daughter of the banished Duke, who dresses up as a man. The play starts with the bad relationship between Orlando and his brother Oliver, who has been unfair to him. Orlando is sad because he wasn't raised as a proper gentleman. We also learn about Duke Frederick, who took over from Duke Senior, Rosalind's father. Rosalind and her cousin Celia are very close, which leads them to run away to the Forest of Arden, where they will find love and change.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.
