Summary

"As You Like It" by William Shakespeare is a comedy that examines love, identity, and the differences between living in the royal court and living simply in the country in the Forest of Arden, where characters like Rosalind, Orlando, and Duke Senior explore love and social changes. The story starts with Orlando de Boys, who feels that his older brother, Oliver, is unfair to him. Orlando wants to be educated like a gentleman, since he is unhappy with his current life. When they argue, we see the stress between them, made worse by Oliver’s mean plans for Orlando. We also learn that Duke Senior has been kicked out and is now living in the Forest of Arden with his faithful friends. The beginning of the play shows us that the story will examine love, family problems, and looking for oneself amid the rules of society.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.
