Summary

"As You Like It" by William Shakespeare is a romantic comedy where love, identity, and the differences between life in court and the countryside are explored. The story centers on Rosalind, a duke's daughter who is forced to disguise herself as a man in the Forest of Arden, where she meets her true love, Orlando, and other interesting people. Early in the play, Orlando is shown to be in conflict with his mean older brother, Oliver, because he doesn't treat him right and doesn't want him to have a good life. Orlando is upset because he feels more like a servant than a son. A wrestling match between Orlando and Charles, a skilled wrestler, is also coming up, and Oliver wants to sabotage Orlando's chances of winning. At court, we meet Rosalind and Celia, her cousin, who talk about how close they are and how sad Rosalind is that her father was banished. The setup is complete for their escape to the Forest of Arden, where they hope to find happiness and discover who they really are, all mixed with love and laughs.

About the Author

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.
