"A Time to Die" by Harold Calin is a science fiction story set in the 1960s, following Captain Robert Kingsford's trip to Aldebaran IX. After a past failed mission, Kingsford seeks to gather valuable ores from Aldebaran IX on a mission narrated by Philip "Buck" Rogers, the executive officer. The crew faces a giant flying monster, testing their courage and what it means to be human. Kingsford's increasing obsession leads to severe outcomes, leaving Rogers as the only one alive to consider the meaning of life in complete solitude, and demonstrating the dangers of letting ambition get out of control.
