Summary

"Apology, Crito, and Phaedo of Socrates" by Plato is a series of philosophical conversations that explore big questions about life, death, and what's right. The book centers on Socrates, a thinker who isn't afraid to disagree with others and challenges everyone to think for themselves as he faces death. First, Socrates defends his actions and beliefs in court, arguing that it's important to seek truth, even if it means going against what everyone else thinks. Early on, the reader finds Socrates reflecting on his wisdom, inspired by a message from an oracle, which leads to his pursuit of truth and justice. From there, the book goes on to look at morality, the reasons for following the law, and the possibility of the soul living on after death.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
